The increasingly widespread and massive use of water disinfection treatments has increased the market need for pipes with high chemical resistance. More and more chemical products with a disinfectant and, therefore, oxidizing action are now launched on the market. The search for materials that offer greater resistance and durability is constant, and involves not only the producers of raw materials, but also the producers of disinfectants. NUPI Industrie Italiane S.p.A. has recently acquired and installed a device to test its chemical resistance to the chemicals that are mostly used in the Italian and European markets. Since May 2024, NUPI began testing its plastic pipes with chlorine dioxide at its laboratory at Castel Guelfo headquarters close to Bologna. The tests can however be carried out using other disinfectants, such as sodium hypochlorite or hydrogen peroxide. The testing equipment allows multiple pipe samples to be tested simultaneously, at a high temperature and at a specific biocide concentration. The ability to manage high temperature tests (up to +115°C) allows for test acceleration and quick performance verification. A continuous monitoring system also allows to check that the test conditions are maintained until the specimen breaks. Tests are managed via OPC connection with the company management system, according to Industry 4.0 criteria. A specially developed interface for the connection to the equipment also allows you to remotely control the test parameters, view the various signals (alarm, stops, breakages, etc.), graph the progress of the test in real time and obtain a final report. This machine will allow the creation, over time, of a database of comparisons between materials aimed at the continuous improvement of NUPI products.
